What Is Backflow?
Backflow happens when water flows in the wrong direction in certain parts of a plumbing system, which can cause the contaminated water to mix with your drinking water. This is a serious health risk and is not to be taken lightly.
Backflow can be caused by variations in pressure in both your plumbing system and the supply system. Back pressure happens when water is forced to flow in the wrong direction, while back siphonage happens when the pressure in your plumbing system is higher than the pressure in the water supply. Our Islip backflow testing professionals will check your entire system for suspected causes and install backflow prevention devices to prevent future problems.
How do I know I need backflow testing?
- Your water is coming out discolored (brown, yellow, or pink)
- Your water is giving off a rotten egg smell
- Your water has a bad taste
- Your water flow is slow or intermittent
- Your water level is higher in some drains than others
- Your water has visible sediment or particles
Backflow Prevention Devices
Joseph Ferme Plumbing and Heating Inc. is certified to install reduced pressure zone devices (RPZs) to prevent backflow into your home or business. RPZs use two independent valves that check or prevent the flow of water from reversing into your system. A chamber sits between these two valves that maintains a pressure lower than the incoming water supply. Another valve acts as a relief valve just below the first check valve. This valve ensures the pressure in the chamber by discharging water into a drain.
RPZs are reliable because of their redundant valves, meaning that should one or both main valves fail, there is another valve to prevent backflow. The redundant design also allows for regular testing and annual check-ups, so you’re always able to make sure your system, and your drinking water, is safe and protected. Our Islip backflow partners will ensure that your plumbing system is uncontaminated and functioning correctly.
